![]() This week, I’m taking a look back at the NBA Live 97 Team Editor. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Once again, it obviously hasn’t prevented some amazing mods from being made, but nevertheless, here are five unfortunate barriers that we’ve encountered while modding. It’s always frustrating when a game is so modder-friendly in some respects, but so limited in what we can do in another area. If nothing else, we’ve had to accept that certain ideas can’t come to fruition exactly how we envisioned them. It’s been our goal in the modding community to find a way around these barriers, but in some cases, we’ve had to admit defeat. However, there are indeed limitations and barriers that make modding difficult, or in the worst case scenario, impossible. ![]() This has only contributed to the feeling of being able to accomplish just about anything we can imagine with the mods that we make for basketball video games. Either by developing new tools or nifty workarounds, we’ve been able to do things that once seemed impossible. The fantastic projects that we’ve seen are the result of hard work, experimentation, and perseverance in the face of barriers that seemingly stood in the way. Sometimes it seems as though we can do anything when it comes to modding the PC versions of NBA 2K, and back in the day, NBA Live. This week’s Five is a list of unfortunate barriers that challenge us when creating great modding projects. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community.

Rigs of Rods was originally just a truck experiment simulator with no specific goals, later it made some sandbox game improvements, added aircraft and ship simulation engines with extremely high customizability (so that the range of activities was not limited to land, but could also be sea and sky), and Lua programming language support, started to support dozens of users to interact in an area simultaneously, and more. Unlike most other vehicle simulators, Rigs of Rods comes with unique soft-body physics models (vehicles, machines, objects, etc.) that are simulated in real-time as flexible soft-body objects, giving the simulation an extremely accurate behavior which entirely depends on the physical construction of the vehicles or objects you created. It simulates cars, trucks, airplanes, boats and everything in between, and uses soft-body physics system (based on mass-spring-damper model) to simulate the vehicle physics, mainly motion destruction and deformation of vehicles. ![]() ![]() ![]() Rigs of Rods is an entirely free, open-source and sandbox-style vehicle simulation program for Windows and Linux platforms. ![]() ![]() The biggest drawback is that you can’t open files from other desktop publishing software, such as InDesign or Quark. You should be able to get up and running quickly thanks to its helpful forums and documentation, and the software even comes with a free selection of templates for things like business cards, brochures and newsletters. There are also some surprising extras like vector drawing tools, emulation of colour blindness and the rendering of markup languages like LaTeX or Lilypond. With a dedicated and enthusiastic developer community behind it, it's stable to use and regularly updated, with all the DTP features you'd hope for including support for OpenType, CMYK colours, spot colours, ICC colour management and versatile PDF creation. First launched back in 2001 (when it would have been a QuarkXPress alternative), Scribus provides an InDesign-like interface and a lot more features than you'd expect from a free package. ![]() That really makes this an InDesign alternative for those who have a personal preference for the software or need to use it in a specific job.Ĭan’t import files from InDesign or QuarkXPressįinding a good free open-source InDesign alternative isn't easy, but there is one in the form of Scribus. It's not as expensive as it used to be, but still fairly pricy considering the cost of the options higher up on our list. The pricing still seems aimed at the corporate market, with a new one-year licence for the 2021 version starting at $474. The main reason QuarkXPress is not higher on this list is the cost. It offers impressive functionality for both print and digital design, and, it can import InDesign files. It can be used to create everything from posters and flyers to brochures, catalogues, and magazines, as well as ebooks and web and mobile apps. QuarkXPress is actually a very powerful and well-featured DTP package that definitely gives InDesign a run for its money.Īvailable for PC or Mac, the software is still updated on an annual basis, usually around late spring/early summer. QuarkXPress dates back to 1987, and while InDesign has since completely stolen its thunder, it's still available and it remains a good InDesign alternative. ![]() The package has a one-off cost of £49.99 / £48.99, with a few templates thrown in, making it a good value if not an entirely comprehensive InDesign alternative get all the facts in our Affinity Publisher review.īack in the days before InDesign was even a thing, QuarkXPress was the only serious desktop publishing package in the game in the 1990s and into the early years of this century it could be found in every design studio and publishing house. Nevertheless, the more understated numbers are also deserving of attention, especially “Small Axe” - one of several songs on the album that the Wailers had already recorded with Lee “Scratch” Perry - with its infectious rhythms and harmonies and its pseudo-biblical lyric of resistance. Of course, Burnin’ is best remembered for the urgent “Burnin’ and Lootin'”, the anthemic “Get up, Stand Up”, and “I Shot the Sheriff”, the song that Eric Clapton would famously cover on 461 Ocean Boulevard a year later. This is particularly true of Livingston’s phenomenal “Oppressed Song”. Three extra Livingston- and Tosh-penned tracks recorded during the Burnin’ sessions appear on this reissue - two of them hitherto unavailable - and, listening to them now, it’s difficult to discern why they weren’t originally included. It finds the Wailers expanding on the fuller, finessed sound that was earning them interest abroad, albeit without the assistance of hired rock session-musicians.Īlthough Bunny Livingston and Tosh were about to leave the Wailers, their contributions here are memorable, especially Livingston’s mournful “Hallelujah Time” and Tosh’s optimistic “One Foundation”. In October 1973, only six months after Catch a Fire, the appropriately entitled Burnin’ appeared. It may cost twice as much and may have “cashing in” written all over it, but it includes the present CD and the previously unavailable, untranslated Jamaican version on which the Wailers’ lean, rough and ready sound can be enjoyed in its original form. While this re-mastered reissue of Catch a Fire includes bonus tracks from the original, so-called “Jamaican” version that never made it onto the English incarnation (“High Tide or Low Tide” and “All Day All Night”), fans might want to check out Universal/Island’s Catch a Fire, released in March 2001. Nevertheless, nearly 30 years after the album’s original release, one of its finest tracks remains Peter Tosh’s “400 Years”, on which Tosh takes lead vocals and gives listeners a taste of what he would achieve as a solo artist on leaving the Wailers in 1974. Overdubs notwithstanding, tracks like “Stir It Up” and “Concrete Jungle” neatly encapsulate the Wailers’ range the band was capable of playful love songs, well within the pop tradition, and songs concerned with social justice and a history of oppression that expanded the horizons of the early ’70s pop idiom. While the majority of Catch a Fire‘s compositions are by Marley - who takes lead vocals on all but two songs - the solid propulsive rhythm section provided by brothers Aston and Carlton Barrett, the staccato guitar patterns of Peter Tosh, and the vocal interplay of Bunny Livingston, Tosh, and Marley emphasize that the Wailers at this point were very much a group, not simply a band centered around Marley. This would be the album to break Burning Spear beyond Jamaica.) (Two years later, Island would take a similar approach with Burning Spear’s Marcus Garvey, an album that was remixed in order to dilute the dark roots grooves of producer Jack Ruby. Nevertheless, in its historical moment, the subtle transformation and finessing of the band’s sound worked well and, particularly in the UK and the US, the album garnered the acclaim Blackwell had sought for the Wailers. In places this so-called “English” version of the Wailers’ material now sounds a little too saccharine and awkward - for example, the rock licks of “Concrete Jungle” and the slide guitar twang of “Baby We’ve Got a Date (Rock It Baby)”. Having taken the master tapes to London, Blackwell enlisted two white American session musicians - guitarist Wayne Perkins and keyboard player John “Rabbit” Bundrick - to flesh out the Wailers’ sparse textures and had the album remixed, effectively translating it into a format that British and American rock audiences would find more palatable. Ever the shrewd businessman - Lee “Scratch” Perry would say a “vampire” - Blackwell convinced the Wailers that certain changes were in order if they were to achieve the degree of success he had in mind. On hearing the tapes of the album that would be Catch a Fire in late 1972, however, he changed his tune slightly. C atch a Fire, Bob Marley and the Wailers’ first major label release, was the album that set the band - primarily Marley, of course - on the road to global fame.Īs numerous music critics have noted, this was a little ironic since the record that broke the group outside of Jamaica was not, strictly speaking at least, the album that Bob Marley and the Wailers presented to Island Records boss Chris Blackwell.Įxcited by their work with producer Lee “Scratch” Perry on records like 1970’s Soul Rebels, Blackwell recognized the Wailers’ potential as the band to take reggae to the rest of the world and signed them to Island. ![]() Though this also might result in clicking or unpredicable delays or cpu spikes, since Zebra then will load a new preset, initalize the audio buffers, etc. Routine 2 uses a random number pattern equipment technical manual to determine the to check the timing of the read, write, and renoise spike amplitude.
